What is Microsurgical Sperm Retrieval?

Microsurgical Sperm Retrieval is an advanced set of procedures, such as mTESE (microdissection testicular sperm extraction) and MESA (Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration), used to retrieve sperm from the testicles or epididymis for use in IVF/ICSI. This technique is reserved for men with Azoospermia (no sperm in the ejaculate) or severe Oligospermia.

Treatment Details

The procedures are performed by a specialist microsurgeon under high-powered magnification:

Procedure Indication & Advantage
mTESE Used for non-obstructive azoospermia (sperm production failure). The microscope allows the surgeon to identify small, viable areas of sperm production, achieving a higher success rate while removing minimal tissue.
MESA Used for obstructive azoospermia (sperm blockages). The procedure carefully aspirates sperm from the epididymis.
Anaesthesia Procedures require general anaesthesia and are performed in a hospital setting.
Outcome Retrieves sperm that can be frozen and used immediately for assisted conception.

The Kalix Approach

Dr. Kim’s specialisation in this field is critical, particularly because many non-microsurgical attempts fail, leading men prematurely to donor options.

  1. Maximising Viability: The use of microsurgery significantly increases the chance of finding viable sperm, even in the most challenging cases, and minimises damage to the delicate testicular tissue.
  2. Less Trauma: By removing less tissue and operating with precision, the procedure causes less trauma to the testicle and preserves future testicular function.
  3. Collaborative Care: We work in lockstep with your chosen IVF clinic, ensuring the sperm retrieval is precisely timed with the egg retrieval for the highest chance of IVF success.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Azoospermia?

Azoospermia means there are no sperm found in the ejaculate. It can be due to an obstruction (treatable) or a problem with sperm production (requires mTESE).

Does successful retrieval guarantee a baby?

Successful retrieval provides the viable sperm necessary for IVF/ICSI. The subsequent success rate depends on the quality of the sperm and the female partner’s reproductive health, managed by your fertility specialist.
