For Patients
To access specialist care in Australia, a valid referral is generally required. Kalix accepts referrals from GPs and other specialists.
1. Referral from Your General Practitioner (GP)
A GP referral is the most common path and ensures you receive any available Medicare rebate for your specialist consultation.
- Process: Your GP writes a formal referral letter detailing your medical history and the reasons for seeking specialist advice.
- Submission: Your GP can send the referral directly to Kalix via fax or secure electronic message (e.g., HealthLink).
- Booking: Once we receive the referral, our Care Team will contact you directly to schedule your appointment with the appropriate subspecialist.
2. Specialist-to-Specialist Referral
If you are already seeing another specialist who believes your condition requires deeper subspecialty focus, they can refer you directly into the Kalix ecosystem.
3. Direct Self-Referral (Non-Medicare)
While a referral is necessary for a Medicare rebate, you may choose to see a Kalix specialist without one.
- Process: You can contact our Care Team directly to book.
- Important Note: You will not be eligible for a Medicare rebate for the consultation fee if you do not have a valid referral. We recommend discussing this option with our team before proceeding.
